WOPHILL EXPLAINS INDOOR MEET CHOICES PDF Print E-mail

As athletes far and wide converge on Doha, Qatar on Friday for the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championship, Athletic Federation of Nigeria secretary-general, Maria Wophill has disclosed that only three athletes (Peter Emelezie, Oghoghene Egwero and Seun Adigun) will represent the country.

Wophill explained in a chat with brilafm.net that the trio’s selection for the competition was a voluntary and discretional approach, not via qualification.

“World indoor championship is not just any ordinary competition to go in for. It’s not a compulsory thing and most athletes who want to peak in the season may not go for it.

“Most of the athletes will stay off, rather than run 60 metres which is more enduring and more energy sapping.

“It’s the discretion of the athlete to say, ‘oh, I can compete’ or not. It’s not about qualifying or not. We have so many of them that can qualify,” she expatiated.
